What Solar Incentives Are Available in Nevada?

If you plan to install solar panels in Nevada, it’s time to familiarize yourself with the many incentives that make it worthwhile beyond increasing the value of your home. In Nevada, you may be able to receive incentives from:

  • Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC). This federal tax credit allows you to deduct a percentage of your solar system installation and equipment costs from your tax liabilities for the year.
  • Net metering through NV Energy. Net metering programs through NV Energy allow you to earn credits for unused solar power. You essentially give extra electricity back to the grid. You then receive a credit that is applied to your monthly energy bill.
  • Potential utility and local energy programs. Depending on your municipality, you may have access to additional incentives and NV solar tax credits at the city or county level through local energy initiatives or your utility company.

How the Federal Solar Credit Works

The federal solar tax credit offsets a portion of your total solar system cost on your federal taxes. Until 2032, it allows for 30% of the equipment and installation costs to be deducted. In 2033, the rate drops to 26%; in 2034, it falls to 22% before being phased out completely.

For example, if the total costs of your solar system and installation are $30,000, $9,000 can be deducted from that year’s taxes. If your credit amount is more than your tax liability, the remainder can be carried forward to future taxes. (If you do not have sufficient tax liability, ask us about power purchase agreement/PPA options.)

This particular program has no caps for the value you claim. It’s also completely independent of your income level. However, you only qualify for this incentive if you own your solar system, so solar leases or solar power purchase agreements aren’t eligible.

Nevada Utility and Rebate Programs

Unfortunately, there is no Nevada solar tax credit at the state level. Most commonly, people save money on solar energy through NV Energy’s net metering program. As your system generates more energy than you use, you can send the surplus back to the grid. NV Energy then applies bill credits that offset any energy consumption you may have. These credits can be stored to apply toward future energy consumption as well, so if your solar panels go down for any reason or if you’re no longer generating more than you use during winter months, you can still see significant savings on your utility bills.

Rebates are a bit harder to come by in Nevada. However, it’s worth checking with NV Energy or the Valley Electric Association to see if they have any once you’re ready to convert. Don’t forget to check your local municipality to see if they have any new offers or incentives to help achieve clean energy goals.

How to Qualify for Nevada Solar Incentives

You must meet certain set parameters to qualify for solar incentives in Nevada. Some eligibility credits can vary from program to program, so be sure to confirm you qualify before applying. Common qualifications include:

  • Owning, rather than renting, your home
  • Installing panels on a structure or roof that meets program requirements
  • Using a certified solar installer
  • Following all local code and permitting requirements
  • Using approved equipment

Many installers are well-versed with local Nevada solar incentives and can help point you in the right direction.
