How Much Does a Whole-House Water Filtration System Cost?

by Celestial Solar | Nov 11, 2024

A whole-house water filtration system can cost anywhere from $50 to more than $80 a month, not including installation, depending on its complexity and the number of gallons it needs to treat. If your system only handles water softening, the cost is often about half what you’d expect to pay for a system that softens and filters the water you drink and use.

To better understand what you might expect to pay, you’ll need to know a lot more about home water filtration systems and their costs. In this article, we’ll take a look at:

  • Types of whole-house water filtration system
  • Water quality and system size
  • Upfront installation costs
  • Ongoing maintenance

Sometimes, you can spend more upfront to get a system that costs less to operate. Before you make a final decision, be sure to ask about the differences and what your total long-term costs might be.

Types of Whole-House Water Filtration System

To get clean water from every tap, you need a system that works on all the water entering your home. There are several options available, all of which focus on different types of contamination. Some examples include:

  • Sediment filters. These filters are often used as part of more complex systems and remove larger particles, such as sand or silt, from the water. This is usually a pre-filtration part of the system and is followed by a filter that removes smaller particles.
  • Carbon filters. Often used in conjunction with sediment filters, carbon filters remove chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, and other chemicals that can affect the taste and smell of your water supply. Water passes through the activated carbon in the filter to absorb contaminants.
  • Reverse osmosis (RO) systems. Typically installed in conjunction with sediment and carbon filters, an RO system is often installed solely for drinking water to get rid of contaminants such as heavy metals, fluoride, and dissolved solids. It’s one of the most expensive options on the market, but the result is great-tasting water.
  • UV purification systems. A UV purification system is the best bet for killing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. It simply passes your water supply through a chamber with UV light to destroy pathogens. It’s a great addition to a filtration system that removes particulates.
  • Water softener systems. If you have hard water and want to remove white spots on your dishes and make rinsing soap easier, an ion-exchange water softener is a top choice. It uses sodium or potassium to change places with magnesium and calcium, softening your water.

For the best water quality, have a professional test your water and determine which combination of filtration, softening, and sanitizing is ideal for your home.

Water Quality and System Size

Your current water quality greatly determines how much a whole-house water filtration system will cost. For example, if you only need a carbon filter to get rid of chemical contaminants, your system is likely to be significantly less expensive than if your water has more types of pollutants.

Another consideration is the size of your home and the system needed to treat the quantity of water. Larger homes need systems that can handle a higher flow rate. If your home has three bathrooms, expect to pay more than someone who has a home with a single bathroom.

Upfront Installation Costs

Installation costs are often tied directly to the complexity of the system that you need. More components require more labor. In general, labor accounts for about half of the total bill for home water filtration installations. RO systems are the most complex to install and may cost more than half of the total. Get a complete, upfront estimate that includes all parts of the installation before selecting a company to improve your water quality.

Ongoing Maintenance

Some systems require consistent maintenance to function properly. If you have a water softener that uses a sodium or potassium solution, you could spend up to $700 per year in additional materials to soften the water. Be sure to ask about these maintenance costs before deciding on a water filtration solution.
